About Kumarakom Tharavadu – Heritage Hotel, Kumarakom, Kottayam

Kumarakom Tharavadu is a premier heritage wedding venue near Vembanad Lake, offering versatile AC indoor and outdoor event spaces for celebrations.

Kumarakom Tharavadu is a heritage guest house and boutique resort in Kumarakom, Kottayam, built in 1870 by 16-year-old M.C. Chandy for the Maliackal family on the banks of the backwaters, where farm produce was once moved to the granary and on to local markets. Known today as a fine example of traditional Kerala architecture, it stands opposite the government boat jetty, a short walk from Vembanad Lake and close to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary. Guests can stay in 8 air-conditioned heritage rooms with modern amenities, and enjoy a swimming pool, a children’s play area, Wi-Fi and room service.

As a wedding and event venue, it welcomes 250 to 300 guests across four spaces, including an AC indoor hall, a main outdoor lawn suited to open-air mandaps and receptions, a smaller outdoor area, and a poolside zone for Haldi and Mehendi. Its signature feature is a private boat jetty for a memorable bride and groom water entry, and outside catering is permitted. This venue suit for destination wedding.

Our Event Experience at This Venue

Our Experience: A Brahmin Wedding at Kumarakom Tharavadu

We had the joy of planning and managing Manali and Sudharsan’s wedding at Kumarakom Tharavadu on 23 August 2026. A Brahmin wedding is full of rituals, and each one has its own timing and its own set of offerings, so the space and the coordination matter as much as the planning. This old Christian tharavadu turned out to be a lovely setting for the ceremony. The dark wooden doors and tiled courtyards suited the rituals so well, and having the temple right across the road made the whole day feel even more special.

Early on the wedding day, strings of jasmine hung against the old wooden doors, and rangoli covered the terracotta courtyard. The homam fire was lit with offerings, sweets and traditional snacks laid out around it, and a vintage gramophone in the corner added a nostalgic touch. The bride wore silk with jasmine garlands, the groom was in a veshti, and the elders and priests guided every ritual. Family gathered around a flower-draped mandap in the open garden, under the shade of old trees.

The oonjalattam, the swing ceremony, was one of the most loved moments of the day. The other rituals followed one after another, calmly and on time, and Manali, Sudharsan and their families were very happy with how everything went.

About the Venue: History and Location

Kumarakom Tharavadu was built in 1870 by M.C. Chandy for the Maliackal family, on the banks of the Kumarakom backwaters. It has more than 150 years of history, and today it is a boutique heritage hotel and wedding venue.

The setting is a big part of its charm:

  • It sits opposite the Government Boat Jetty, a short walk from Vembanad Lake.
  • The Sree Kumaramangalam Temple is right across from it.
  • The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is close by.
What the Property Offers
  • 8 luxurious air-conditioned rooms
  • An outdoor swimming pool
  • An in-house restaurant
  • A children’s play area
  • Free Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service
  • A private boat jetty
  • Old shady trees, a traditional oonjal (swing) and a backwater that looks like a gentle stream
How We Used Each Space

The venue has one indoor space, two outdoor spaces (the lawn and the poolside) and an in-built mandap. Here is how the day flowed.

Entrance and reception. Guests walk in through the entrance to the reception area. The swimming pool sits right in the middle of the property, surrounded by the old house, which gives it a naalukettu feel with a touch of luxury.

In-built mandap (left of the reception). This is a lovely spot for Haldi, Mehendi and other small parties.

Open lawn (right of the reception). The lawn is open, well kept and ready for open-air functions.

Indoor hall (opposite the lawn). It seats 45 and works well for small functions. For this wedding, we set it up as the main food corner.

Fixed stage. The venue has a fixed platform of 30 x 16 ft. with its own backdrops built in. That means extra stage décor isn’t possible, but the setup already looks complete.

Boat jetty and backwater. The backwater here looks like a small stream. If a couple wants it, the bride and groom can make a grand entry by boat from the jetty.

Catering and Kitchen

The venue has a kitchen, and at this wedding our catering team used it to prepare the food. We can’t say yet whether other weddings will be able to use it in future, so please check with the venue. They are also planning a buffet setup for upcoming events.

Capacity, Booking and Rates

The venue is listed for about 300 guests, and floating capacity of up to 600 can be expected. With our 100 guests, the space felt comfortable and unhurried.

You can book the full venue, or choose with or without rooms, whichever suits your plans. Compared with other heritage venues, the rates are lower, so it is an affordable choice for a heritage backwater wedding.

What We Learned: Tips for Planning a Wedding Here
  1. Plan around the fixed stage. You can’t add decor to it, so put your effort into the mandap, entrance, lawn and pool area.
  2. Let the layout guide your day. The in-built mandap works for Haldi and Mehendi, the lawn for open functions and the indoor hall for food, so the day flows naturally.
  3. Decide on rooms early. Know whether your family needs to stay on site, or whether you only need the venue.
  4. Check the catering plans. Confirm the kitchen and buffet arrangements with the venue before you finalise your caterer.
  5. Plan the rituals carefully. For a Brahmin wedding, a clear order of rituals and a team that keeps the offerings, priests and family in step makes the day much smoother.
