A backwater destination wedding

When Ganga and Akshit decided to tie the knot, they envisioned an intimate, open-air backwater destination wedding bringing together two traditions, a Kerala bride and a North Indian groom. They chose the iconic Le Méridien Kochi, set against the serene backwaters, and exchanged vows outdoors on the resort’s lush Amphitheater Lawn.

This was a milestone for the venue, as it was the first-ever outdoor wedding held at Le Méridien Kochi’s amphitheater space. For Melodia Event Management, the goal was clear: turn an unprecedented outdoor wedding venue into a seamless, high-energy fusion wedding for 200 cherished guests, with morning logistics that ran without a single hitch.

The Story

Ganga had always known her wedding would take place in the backwaters. Akshit, who grew up far from Kerala’s palm-lined canals, had one request: that it feel like both of them. So when they sat down with the team at Melodia Event Management, the wish was simple. One day, one celebration: North Indian rituals wrapped in Kerala’s warmth, held outdoors beside the water, with a five-lakh budget to respect.

Melodia’s answer was Le Méridien Kochi, and more specifically its Amphitheater Lawn, a space where the resort had never hosted an outdoor wedding before. It had open sky, natural light, and the backwaters stretching out behind it, which did much of the decorating for free. It also meant nobody had done this here before, so the team had to work out every detail themselves.

The lawn was exposed, and the backwater winds are unpredictable. Tropical humidity is hard on flowers. So the crew built through the night before the wedding, anchoring the waterfront stage and mandap with counterweighted frameworks and using special techniques to keep the floral decor fresh. A rain plan stood ready too: quick-deploy waterproof canopies and an indoor banquet space as a quiet backup. When local labor demands threatened to push up the cost of moving equipment, Melodia negotiated a fair, reduced rate, so neither the budget nor the schedule suffered. A guest in a room overlooking the pool watched the team setting up late into the night.

Then came November 27, 2025.

By 8:00, the photographers were already at work, capturing the empty lawn and the details of the floral decor. At 9:00, the poojari began his preparations, and the ceremonial lamps were readied. Around the same time the first guests arrived, were welcomed with drinks, and filled in keepsakes for the couple while they waited. Soon about 200 people were gathered on the lawn.

At 9:30, the parents came forward, led by the thaalam bearers. Then the Panchavadyam ensemble began to play, and Akshit made his entrance to the song “Swagatham Krishna.” Ganga followed, and the lawn went quiet as she walked in.

At 10:00 came the muhurtham, the heart of the day. Under open sky, with the backwaters behind them, the thaalikettu was tied, and the rituals were completed. By 10:30 the stage was full of family. Everyone gathered for portraits, with Kathakali artists and Mohiniyattam dancers joining the couple in some of the most striking photos of the day. The formalities were wrapped up, and Ganga and Akshit stood alone on stage for a quiet namaskaram.

Then the mood turned playful. From 10:30 until 12:30, the lawn became a celebration of speeches, live singing and a couple photo session, with games that had everyone laughing: a treasure hunt, a lemon-and-spoon race, and the traditional uriyadi, where a hanging pot is broken blindfolded. Relatives who had barely met that morning were soon cheering each other on.

At 12:30 everyone sat down to a grand lunch, and by 1:30 the wedding came to a happy close.

Afterward, a guest wrote to the team: “The wedding decor looked amazing! The groom’s family were very impressed with the entire setup. Thank you so much for putting all of this together, especially Aswin Melodia and everyone on the team. I had a room with a window view to the pool area. I saw you all setting things up the previous night as well. Thanks again.”

For Melodia, this was the first outdoor Hindu wedding at Le Méridien Kochi, and the experience gained there helped establish the team as the planner of choice for destination weddings at this venue. Ganga and Akshit had asked for a wedding that felt like both of them, by the water, on a thoughtful budget. They got exactly that.

The Challenge & Our Approach

Tradition Meets the Tide

Planning a destination wedding requires a delicate balance of cultural honor, logistical foresight, and creative spatial design. When Ganga and Akshit chose the scenic backwaters of Le Méridien Kochi to unite their Kerala and North Indian traditions, the stage was set for a truly groundbreaking celebration. Here is how Melodia Event Management transformed an unprecedented outdoor venue setting into a flawless, high-energy fusion wedding.

The Challenge

Unlocking Le Méridien’s Amphitheater

Executing an outdoor traditional hindu wedding on the exposed lawns of Le Méridien Kochi introduced severe environmental and structural challenges. To safeguard delicate floral setups, heavy stage production, and traditional mandap decor against high tropical humidity and unpredictable backwater winds, the engineering team implemented specialized structural anchoring for the waterfront stage, advanced floral preservation techniques, and a precise overnight execution schedule to ensure flawless aesthetic and technical performance.

Melodia's Solution

Overcoming the Elements

To overcome the environmental and structural demands of the exposed backwater lawn, our production team engineered a comprehensive outdoor setup strategy. We deployed specialized structural anchoring for the waterfront stage and mandap to counter unpredictable coastal winds, utilized advanced floral preservation techniques to withstand tropical humidity, and executed a precise overnight build schedule. This guaranteed flawless aesthetic beauty, total structural safety, and uninterrupted technical performance throughout the morning ceremony.

The Celebration

Every Moment Timed to the Minute

Executing an unprecedented outdoor setup required a high-precision operational timeline. From the initial overnight structural builds to the final evening reception beats, every phase of Ganga and Akshit’s celebration was timed down to the minute to ensure flawless transitions and zero delays.

Mohiniyattam

Mohiniyattam is a traditional classical dance form of Kerala. The name is derived from the words 'Mohini' (a beautiful woman) and 'Aattam' (dance). Gentle and elegant movements, highly expressive facial emotions, and simple attire featuring a Kasavu saree and jasmine flowers are the main characteristics of Mohiniyattam.

Kathakali

Kathakali is Kerala’s classical dance-drama, whose name combines “Katha” (story) and “Kali” (play). Known for dramatic face painting, majestic costumes, expressive eye movements, and hand gestures (Mudras), it brings mythological tales to life with traditional percussion and music. Houseboat entry

An entry on a traditional houseboat (Kettuvallam) adds a unique charm to waterfront wedding venues. Arriving on a houseboat decorated with flowers and traditional brass lamps (Nilavilakku), accompanied by the sounds of the Nadaswaram and Chenda Melam, creates an unforgettable visual experience for the guests.

Nadaswaram

The Nadaswaram is one of the most sacred and auspicious traditional wind instruments of South India. Playing the Nadaswaram during the auspicious muhurtham at Hindu rituals and weddings is considered blessed. It is typically performed to the accompaniment of the Thavil. its a Kerala wind instrument

Questions Couples Ask

Planning your Event in Kerala?

Why was the Outdoor Amphitheater Lawn at Le Méridien Kochi chosen for this wedding?

The couple wanted an intimate, open-air celebration with natural lighting and scenic backwater views. Selecting the amphitheater allowed Melodia Event Management to pioneer a brand-new outdoor event space for Le Méridien Kochi while providing a unique backdrop for their 200 guests.

How do you secure outdoor mandaps against backwater winds and Kochi’s humidity?

We construct high-stability structural frameworks with counter-weighted anchor systems that withstand high waterfront wind speeds. For tropical humidity, we use climate-resistant floral preservation techniques and timed hydration setups to ensure the mandap decor stays fresh throughout the multi-day event.

How does Melodia handle full event planning for NRI families living abroad?

We offer 100% remote project management. Using digital floor plans, 3D spatial renders, real-time budget tracking, and scheduled video walkthroughs, we guide you through every choice—from venue layout to vendor selection—ensuring complete clarity without requiring you to travel early.

How do you resolve local labor union and transport issues at venue locations like Le Méridien?

With over 18 years of local operational experience, we maintain established relationships and strategic negotiation frameworks with regional unions. We manage load-in/load-out logistics directly, preventing unexpected delays or inflated transportation surcharges for our clients.

Can complex traditional elements like Kettuvallam (houseboat) entries be arranged seamlessly at Le Méridien Kochi?

Yes. Since Le Méridien has backwater access, we coordinate marine arrival permits, timing, safety protocols, and synchronization with traditional Nadaswaram or Kathakali performances for a flawless grand entry.

What is the contingency plan if it rains during an outdoor waterfront wedding?

We build a dual-layer contingency structure into every outdoor plan. This includes real-time weather tracking, quick-deploy waterproof canopy systems, and pre-approved backup transitions to Le Méridien’s indoor banquet spaces with zero disruption to the ceremony schedule.

Why should we hire an external planner like Melodia instead of relying solely on the hotel’s in-house team?

While the venue team handles food, beverage, and basic room management, Melodia manages end-to-end custom production, including structural engineering, union negotiations, cultural performance curation, vendor management, and overall budget control tailored specifically to your family’s vision.
